“City of Music,” a two-hour television special exploring 250 years of St Louis’ contributions to America’s musical heritage, will premiere on PBS affiliate Nine Network in two parts at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 17.

Produced with funding from the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation, “City of Music” weaves historic narrative and interviews with live performances recorded last October at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis.

In addition to appearances by some of St. Louis’ top musicians, including Peter Martin, Denise Thimes, Kim Massie, Billy Peek, the Illphonics, the St. Louis Ragtimers and more, the concert also featured Alarm Will Sound performing works by Martin and the Mizzou New Music Initiative‘s Stefan Freund that were commissioned specifically for the occasion.

The concert and documentary both have their origins in an idea by the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation’s Jeanne Sinquefield and Stefan Freund. “The concept was to celebrate the past and future of all the styles of original music from St Louis and Missouri,” said Sinquefield.

To make the idea a reality, they enlisted the help of Paul Reuter, executive director of The Sheldon. “Paul suggested having it at the Sheldon and making it a real gala,” Sinquefield said. “While Stefan and I provided general ideas for type of music and performers, the event never would have happened without Paul doing most of the work. He found the performers, commissioned the new works, and persuaded Nine Network to do the documentary on the concert.”

You can hear more about “City of Music” in this interview that Peter Martin and Nine Network’s Patrick Murphy did with St. Louis Public Radio.

A re-broadcast of both parts is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, and Nine Network also plans to distribute the program to other PBS affiliates around the nation.
