Mizzou New Music Summer Festival reveals composers

It’s just January 9, and yet you can almost hear the sizzling sounds of summer radiating from the University of Missouri School of Music.

Today, MU released the names of the eight resident composers who will play a prominent role in this summer’s Mizzou New Music Summer Festival, the third go-round of the now-annual event. The festival is a major component of the Mizzou New Music Initiative, an artistic enterprise designed to further Columbia’s status as a modern-day hub for creativity and composition.

Each summer, emerging composers meet, mingle and make music with two veterans of the art form, then have their works premiered by an ensemble at the vanguard of new music, Alarm Will Sound (which features MU professor Stefan Freund). A number of other public concerts, workshops and rehearsals give area listeners a unique, intimate opportunity to be allowed into the creative process and affords an understanding of how and where new sounds are entering the atmosphere.

From 144 applicants across the globe, these eight were chosen:

Stephanie Berg, Columbia

Brian Ciach, Bloomington, Ind.

David Crowell, New York

Stylianos Dimou, Rochester, N.Y.

Ted Goldman, Rochester, N.Y.

Patrick Harlin, Ann Arbor, Mich.

Asha Srinivasan, Appleton, Wis.

Charlie Piper, London

These composers will have the opportunity to interact with established composers Steven Stucky, a Pulitzer Prize-winning professor at Cornell University, and acclaimed Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy.

The festival will take place July 23 through 28. More details will be announced in the coming days. For now, you can learn more here and read a small sampling of our coverage of last year’s festival:
